Update of Doug Henry

by News Channel 8's Alan CohnPosted June 26, 20085:15 PM
(WTNH) _ In the world of motocross, Connecticut's own Doug Henry is a legend. He talked with News Channel 8 about his career ending and life changing accident that has not slowed him down.

Few athletes have dominated any sport like Connecticut's Doug Henry ruled motocross. Three national championships and a rider of the year award are among his accomplishments.
"I was at the top level there I reached the peak. It was my time," Henry said.

And few athletes have been able to battle back from injuries as devastating as the one in 1995.
"I went faster than I ever went before," Henry said. "I flew out too far and ended up breaking my back."

To reclaim that top spot again Henry endured months of rehabilitation.
"I almost called it quits because of how difficult it was to get up to speed. But I did get back up to speed," Henry said.

"He was a man on a mission," his wife Stacey said.
He came back and won a gold medal in the SuperMoto at the 2005 X-Games.
If that was all there was to Doug Henry's story it would be a darn good one. But it's only the beginning. Henry and his family overcame an incredible challenge but nothing like the one they were about to face.

This time there were no cameras when Henry's bike slid out from underneath him after hitting a patch of oil at a track in Florida last year.

"It's like hitting ice," Henry explained.

He and his bike hit the concrete wall.

"I knew immediately this was probably my last race," Henry said.

Doug Henry was paralyzed from the waist down. And within days, Doug's wife Stacey received a devastating diagnosis.

"She discovered breast cancer. I mean it was like we have two things we are going through but we are going to go through them together," Henry said.

"The instinct for me was to take care of him while I deal with my own health issues. I had to back off and that's how he wanted it," Stacey said.

Together and separately Doug and Stacey battled paralysis and cancer while raising two kids, 12-year old Brianna and 9-year old Ian.

"The kids aren't looking into the future and thinking about what mom and dad can't do. They want to know what we are here to do today," Henry said.

And what Stacey and Doug are here to do is live. Doug has installed hand controls in every piece of equipment on the family's 89-acre Torrington Farm. Using his upper body strength, he climbs into his bulldozer and moves piles of wood. When he's done, he climbs back into his Rhino, straps his wheelchair to the side and drives around the property.

He's built three motocross courses so neighborhood kids have someplace to ride.
"The first thing they do is look over and see if I saw what they did," Henry said.
And every day, Doug Henry straps on leg braces, pulls himself to his feet and by sheer will, walks by shifting his weight side to side.

"The repetitive motion is supposed to regenerate the nerves. I'm going by theory but it gives me something," Henry said.

"That's what I cherish and love about him the most. It's not only that attitude he applied towards racing it's truly his attitude towards living...and he's living differently now but it's still he puts a lot of heart and passion into everything he does," Stacey said.

Because today, Doug Henry isn't thinking about the championships he's won or the acclaim he's received. Today, he defines winning as being able to stand along the fence to watch his daughter play softball.

"I think this makes all the hard work I've put in worth it to see my kids play and have some fun a big smile that's what I like to see them having some fun," Henry said.

Henry is still involved in supermotocross by sponsoring Doug Henry's New England Supermoto Grand Prix in August at Stafford Motor Speedway.

all the best to Doug and Stacey!!

First male patient in KK hospital

KK hospital = a hospital for women and children only

My brother-in law wife just gave birth last friday late afternoon, it is a 3kg+ little boy. So i was thinking, cool, now it is his turn to learn to be a father, and he needs to learn how to change diapers, hahahaa.

Over the weekend, he was staying over at the hospital, accompanying his wife, it is not easy, full day at hospital, is really bad, for me, I don't know about him, this bring me back a little memories back in 2004.

My boy came into the world in 04, so the same thing, I accompany my wife in KK hospital the whole day, for 3 full days, except I went home to sleep. So one of this day, i guess is on the 2nd day afternoon, I was dead tired and I can't do anything, I got no place to lie down to rest, except on the stupid chair.

Ok, so my wife was tired of lying sooooo long on the bed, so I said, let me rest for awhile on the bed. With the curtain pulled around the bed, I lie on the bed, watching the TV, while my wife sit on the chair next to me.

Suddenly, a nurse came in from behind a curtain and walk in a gentleman after her, seem like a doctor to me. Then the staff was explaining to us that today is a anniversary of the KK hospital, so the director of the hospital is giving out souvenior to all patient today.

And, this gentleman was the director, he walk toward me with some kind of goodies bag and said:" so you are the first male patient of our hospital" hahahaa, I then start to smile at him and my wife was laughing out also, it was such a nice memories to me, and that humorous director.

The good old days...

A woman poem and a man

A Woman's PoemBefore I lay me down to sleepI pray for a man, who's not a creep,

One who's handsome, smart and strong,

One who loves to listen long,One who thinks before he speaks,

One who'll call, not wait for weeks.I pray he's gainfully employed,

When I spend his cash, won't be annoyed.

Pulls out my chair and opens my door,Massages my back and begs to do more.

Oh! Send me a man who'll make love to my mind,Knows what to answer to "how big is my behind?"

I pray that this man will love me to no end,And always always be my very best friend.

A Man's Poem

I pray for a deaf-mute gymnast nymphomaniac
With huge booobs who owns a bar on a golf course
And loves to send me fishing and drinking.
This doesn't rhyme and I don't give a sh.. .

A busy week dude

Was busy deploying my plan and sending out letters, emails to all relevant parties. Manage to met up with my ex-boss, who have given quite substantial good info and perhap some assistance.

Both my kids are down with fever and flu, so when I'm back home, it is second round of busi-ness again, send them to see doc, feed milk, clear out the vomits, etc...

Reach home yesterday and realise, my bro-in-law wife have finally give birth, to a boy, at about 3kg+, didn't go visit them is because of my 2 still sick kids, shall visit them in a couple of days when they are back home.

TGIF!!

A joke

The doctor told a man that masturbating before sex, often helped men last longer during the act. The man decided, 'What the heck, I'll try it.'

He spent the rest of the day thinking about where to do it. He couldn't do it in his office. He thought about the restroom, but that was too open. He considered an alley but figured that was too unsafe.

Finally, he realized his solution. On the way home from work, he pulled his truck over on the side of the highway. He got out and crawled underneath as if examining the truck.

Satisfied with the privacy, he undid his pants and started to masturbate, he closed his eyes and thought of his lover.

As he grew closer to orgasm, he felt a quick tug at his pant leg. Not wanting to l ose his mental fantasy or the orgasm, he kept his eyes shut and replied, 'What?'

He heard 'This is the police. What in the hell are you doing?' The man replied, 'I'm checking out the rear axle, it's busted.'

The cop says, 'Well, you better check your brakes too, because your truck rolled down the hill 5 minutes ago.'

Clam digging

It was a cloudy sunny day, we were digging for clam, from 10am till about 1pm. We got a total of about half pail full (in the background), result is not totally bad, but also, not so fantastic.
Anyway, it is pretty hard work, we were squatting for almost the 3hours, as it was wet and muddy everywhere, but it is fun when you found those clam sticking in the mud.
We manage to keep the clam alive, but letting them to spit out all the sand. After a night of "detox", I ate some of them, it taste really good and fresh, without those "fishy" smell at all, no ginger or garlic is needed.
What I did was, I use a bowl with cover (microwave friendly type), pick up about 5-6 clam and put it into the bowl, and cover on. Put it into the microwave and set it to 1minute.
When the bell sounds, remove the bowl and start to eat it, it will taste so good and fresh, no ingredient needed at all!!
Man, when is the next trip!!

My son gave me this.

I didn't know this sunday is Father's day, until my boy gave this the minute yesterday when i reach home.
I'm happy :)
Have been a father since 2004, but never ever did i notice or give a damn about it, until this year, the first time i receive something from my kid, I'm touch...
Happy Father Day to all father in the world!!!

HSBC Treetop Walk 8 Jun 2008

After the last enduro race on sunday, my wife wants me to go hiking in the treetop walk, and i agreed.

It was a cloudy sunday morning, and we decided we will proceed as my wife have been looking foward to the weekend walk. It is indicated that we should reach the treetop walk in about an hour from where we park.

Can see there are quite alot of family bringing their kids, old man, old lady for this walk, air is fresh, you can see stream along the way, mango tree, etc

As the trail in pretty tight, one would walk infront, while the other will follow. Along the way, it is still about the same stuff you will see in Bt Timah hill, just that this is nearer to the main road, you can hear vehicle sound as you walk, not entirely serene like you will feel in the real nature reserve.

We reach the suspended bridge in about 1.5hours, not too bad. I was getting abit of cold feet (am afraid of height, hahaa) . Anyway, the bridge was about 250m long and it was all over, nothing really much to see except that we are at a really high spot.

We had quite a long walk back, up and down a long flight of wooden steps/ staircases. Need abit of rest at one of the resting point. My already aching thigh and bum from the last race, actually add more pain from this walk, but who cares, it should tone it up well before the next race.

anyway, sorry for this long winded and un-interesting post. Hope you enjoy it.

Sorry folks

I have been busy with doing my new stuff, from physcial hands on job, to administrative, planning, logistic etc

It is a whole new thing to me, as I handle alot more of the entire operation.

At the same time, am planning to come back riding more often, hoping it will generate more energy in myself, for work and for races.

Sorry for the many days of no show folks.

Have a nice weekend!!

MSSC enduro race round 1

Well, 1st june mark the MSSC first enduro race, round 1, 2008. I was suppose to take part in motocross instead, but i miss it, thus i join this enduro race.

I'm not well conditioned for the race, however, i just join for the sake of fun, and also to meet new friends. I used my 450 machine for the race, which is kind of a big mistake.

Anway, the sky was drizzling since early morning, in Singapore side, till the custom, and it is all dry in Nusajaya (the race track in Msia)

First time in the enduro race, I saw plenty of CRF250F, KTM 250F, the EXC and a couples of 2smokers, it seem like 250 thumper is the choice of weapon.

A sighting lap was conducted and it was kind of the bad move, many riders were stuck in a tricky session in the forest, i was lucky to ride it out of it and back to the top of the hill. We were waiting for some of the riders to clear the section before we can start the race officially. anyway, this difficult part was being take out of the track, for ease of carrying out of the race event.

I was in the expert class and it was going to be fun I guess, as enduro was never my forte, anyway, what the heck, just enjoy the ride!

Race started, with the expert class, follow by the novice riders. My arm start to pump in the mid lap and when i completed my first lap, I stop for a drink and carry on with the race, I was trying my best to hold onto the bike as this 450 power through the rutted terrain and rear wheel kicking all over (still in motocross suspension setup), and I was able to complete the moto 1, for 30mins, I'm surprised!

After a brief 15- 20mins break, moto2 started. This time round, i can managed to hold my speed longer and faster (but i still do fall), due to lost concetration. But am able to get up and fire up the bike and carry on with the race, picking up some of the slow or crashed rider thru the race.

3 laps covered and I'm into my 4th lap, this time round, front wheel slipped, and I drop into a small cliff and after lifting the heavy bike up with all my might, I couldn't start the bike. This is bike, I was totally exhausted from all the kicking (e-start is good I guess :) ) so took out my helmet, and goggle, I waited for about 20mins, seeing many riders zoom past, but they didn't see me as I was pretty much lowered and covered by those tall grass.

Finally, a marshal came around to help me push up the bike, I asked for a drink and with the body totally shaq out, I remove my jersey, kidney belt, and even my boots, lie down on the grass, cooling my head with some water too.

Sometimes later, i heard no more sound, the race must have ended I guess. I told the marshal to inform my mate to come time to give me a hand, I was so exhausted that, I was thinking if I were able to get myself out of this state. So I was left alone in the forest, listening to all the songs of nature, with my bare upper body (luckily no mosquito)

about 15mins later, my mate come looking for me, he tried to fire up my beast, and it manage to start, God bless! With my beat up body, I was thinking to ride his e-start 250 instead of my 450. And just in time, another mate came riding a pit bike, looking for me as well. Best, I would ride that small bike, it is easier on my body.

Finally, after a wobbly ride uphill, I'm back to top of the hill, slumbering down on a beach chair, while quenching down mydry thirst.

Cool, this is the first time, I'm so beat up in a race. Perhap I should need to pick up my fitness level instead of letting other to come rescuing me again, oppss.. :P
