2010 yz250f

LOOKING TO RIDING ENTHUSIASTS for feedback during development, Yamaha has created its 2010 YZ250F with the rigorous demands of motocross in mind.

The feedback Yamaha’s engineers received helped them develop a better handling bike: the new YZ250F allows earlier acceleration out of corners and a less tiring ride.

From the ground up, Yamaha concentrated on building a purpose-built machine. Instead of adapting an existing 450cc frame, a stand-alone frame, built around the unique power and weight characteristics of a 250cc engine, has been developed.
The compact and lightweight frame makes for a better balanced bike which requires less rider feedback.

Items like the fuel tank, which sits lower in the frame, and the radiator, mounted lower and further back, all contribute to a more centralised weight distribution.

Front and rear damper settings have also been fine-tuned, allowing riders a better feel for the terrain. The resulting added traction and improved turn-in are also designed to provide a competitive edge.

Yamaha’s engineers also discovered the existing 250cc engine already provided the best balance of power, compact dimensions and light weight.
Yamaha’s five titanium-valve engine remains, although it has been thoroughly revised. A higher lift intake camshaft and revised exhaust port and carburetor intake funnel allow for a punchier riding feel.

Also coming in for attention are new valve springs and retainers, revised ignition mapping, and a re-shaped air cleaner box to improve intake efficiency. Yamaha’s engineers have concentrated on power characteristics from quarter to half throttle to improve feel when accelerating out of corners.

Styling too has been revised: the purposeful ‘dart-like’ profile of the YZ250F remains, but all plastic parts have been made as small as possible while still retaining their protective functions.
A flatter tank, seat and rear mud guard also allow easy rider movement. The relationship between four-position adjustable handlebars, pegs and seat has also been tweaked to allow for a roomy and natural riding position.

Yamaha’s Sean Hawker confirmed to TMR that while no specific date has been confirmed, the YZ250F should launch in Australia around late September to early October. Pricing details will be announced closer to the launch.

up and down

Doug Henry Standing Tall

Doug Henry Standing Tall

Doug Henry Steps Up To The Mic To Congratulate James Stewart

Something amazing happened at Yamaha’s recent event to congratulate James Stewart on winning the 2009 Supercross Championship and award him his YZ450F. After James had stepped over to take the microphone, a van pulled up behind the grass rise where the event was happening.

When the van pulled away, there was Doug Henry. He had crutches in his hands, and braces on his legs under his jeans, but he was standing there in front of the Yamaha headquarters. And then… he walked. That sounds more optimistic than the actual happening, but it was great. Braces kept Doug’s legs straight, and his arms were doing a lot of the work, but his torso was gyrating and his feet were taking steps forward. He needed help to get up the rise to the microphone, but he got there, stood tall, and admitted, with a big smile on his face, that he was winded and was “out of shape.”

Doug congratulated Stewart on his championship, and stuck around long enough after the event to answer a few questions.

Pete Peterson: Can you tell me how are you able to do this? Do you have braces on?

Doug Henry: Yeah, I have straight leg braces that I use. It’s really hard to work in them because my hands are full so how do I pick anything up and carry it around? So I use ‘em to get around when I know I’m not going to be doing any lifting. I get in my leg braces and I walk around the house most of the time. The kids play softball and baseball so I go out to the field and there’s a fence, so it’s really easy to just grab onto the fence if I’m going to fall or whatever, which I do just about every time I’m up. It’s a learning curve, and I think I’m getting better. I make progress, but it’s really, really slow. It’s hard to notice within weeks. It seems like it’s a month before you really notice anything. But sometimes it just all the sudden pops up that it’s easier, so I know there’s improvement.

PP: Is there a benefit to going around in the braces as opposed to a chair? Is it building your core muscles, anything like that?

DH: I think a lot of it is weight bearing on your bones. Keeping the weight on your bones, kinda getting off your butt, keeping your back stretched out instead of sitting at that 90 degree all the time. I try to get up and do some stretching, and do some weight bearing, and do some balance, and work on that. And you know, you can see little tiny muscles firing in the leg and hopefully that’ll grow. I’m just kinda waiting for something to happen. But if it doesn’t I’m just gonna keep moving.

[note: for these next two questions, you have to hear and see Doug answering with his optimistic smile]

PP: How difficult was it to do what we saw you do here today?

DH: Keith (McCarty) came out here when he called me and he said, ‘I’m looking at the hill right now. It’s about a twenty foot walk and it goes up about five feet.’ So I’m trying to figure out what kind of pitch that is in my head, and that’s way too steep for me. I said I can do it with a hand rail or a solid body. They had Mike Guerra come up and I was throwing him around like a rag doll. To balance is really, really hard. And you use a lot of arm strength to balance, especially going up a hill. It was a work out trying to get up this hill.

PP: How’d you feel when you got up to the podium?

DH: I felt pretty wore out, but it’s all exercise, it’s all training, it’s all good.

PP: What’s your role with Yamaha these days?

DH: I try to help out with whatever I can with them. I don’t really have a certain role. I do a lot of stuff at home, going to dealerships, events, I’ve been going to a lot of schools just for awareness for motocross and trying to get more areas available to ride in Connecticut and the surrounding areas. But whenever the phone rings and it’s Yamaha, I pretty much do what they say because they’ve helped me out so much and I could never repay them for the success I’ve had in racing, and with this injury they’ve just been so supportive. I owe ‘em everything I’ve got, you know?

PP: Looking back at your racing days, what was the high point of that career?

DH: (In 1997) Winning Vegas on that four-stroke was the most amazing night. It didn’t seem like it was such a big deal at the time for me. I had an idea, but nothing compared to what the ripple effect was years down the road. It was amazing what that win really did. People just love four-strokes, but they just didn’t have a good, quality racing four-stroke. When I won on that, so many people went out and bought ‘em, so it’s just changed a lot.

PP: Are there any foundations you want to make us aware of, somewhere we can go to help you directly or help out the cause for spinal injury recovery research?
DH: There are a lot of different foundations. Rider Down (www.riderdown.org) and Road to Recovery (road2recovery.com), those two have helped me out with a lot of benefits and raising money. But I’m going to try to put together something, I’ve got some ideas in my head, and maybe in the next couple years we’ll have something that’ll benefit some of the guys that are hurt.

interesting read

Savagea

What is the combo you enjoying so much? 450SX big bore?

Related story, the year was 1972, I had a fast young MX rider working for me, he had the latest Husky 250CR. That was a big compramise in itself as the crank wheels where the same pieces as the 400. On a 400 the outter edge of the big end of the rod matched the outter edge of the crank wheel.

On the 250 there was about 6MM of excess steel there or rod was 6mm in from the edge. One day we had it aprt for some other project and I got a wild hare, took the crank apart and turned it in the lathe taking off that 6mm (of radius, 12mm of diameter).

Next a made a wood mold and cast an epoxy filler, (being a two stroke the crankcase volume plays into a primary compression ratio). He came back from that weeks race just blown away with how much quicker steering the bike was.

Now we gotta be carfull in talking about steering! What crank weight does is slow down the transition from leaned left to leaned right! You have ridden a 250 2 stroke MX bike & then a 125?? The 125 felt 30% lighter but was really more like 5 or 10%? This is crank inertia.

The next factor is where the weight is!When the bike makes this left right transition it does so via you steering the tires contact patch out from under the Center of Mass (COM) and pivots at the COM thus creating a roll center.

Where is this roll center, well maybe if you do a wheelie and have someone snap a pic just before you go over backwards, then do a stoppie and do the same, draw a verticle line from the tires contact patch, overlay the two pics where the line crosses will be where the crank is centered on the 09 Huseberg. I have not ridden one yet but the parties I have spoke to the have they have it right!

One friend said pushing the bike around it feels top heavy and clumbsy, let the clutch out and a 570 feals like a 125.

Why is Husebergs moving the center of the cark to the COM advantagois? When we do that left right transition with a conventional bike we are swinging the gyroscope of the crank side to side below the COM.

A couple years ago I was at the cycle show, I stopped at the Beull display to admire their peice and this branwasher Harley guy working for a local dealer starts telling me how the "Beull has the lowest Center of Gravity of any bike made."

I ask him, "Which is heavier, muffler or crank, transmisson, cases etc.?"He said "Engine & trans is heavier, the muffler is mostly empty!" So I ask "Wonder why a bright engineer with a Road Racing background like Eric Beull raised the engine up and put a truck muffler under it when he could have lowered the engine and hung the muffler out the back like everyone else does?"

He just went back to admiring his tattoo, Fact is the excellent handling Beull has the highest COM production bike made.

Another side story; Ever noticce that guys that get a BMW twin usually stay on them forever (13 years for me), similar with MotoGuzzi, Honda Goldwing, all of these bikes have a North South crankshaft orientation.

Pros & cons;

Pros; the gyro effect is stabilizing front to rear rather that side to side.

Cons; if you are not steady on the throttle the bike twitches side to side and the overall drive train is heavy showing little advantage as drive chains have improved

Hand Food Mouth Disease

last friday, while sending the kids to child care

my boy suspected to have HFMD, so end up, leave my daughter in school and bring the boy to see doc, and it is confirmed.

symtom of HFMD, red spots on finger (on the palm side finger), and on the foot, both on toes and under the feets, and red spots in the mouth, at the ceiling area. for those red spots on fingers and toes, you can feel it as it is protruding, and when you press it, it will be painful.

and for the mouth, they will have problem eating, because it is painful when they eat. some kids can't even eat, they can only drink, cold water. And if the case is serious, as parent need to becareful, as they could get dehydraded and need to send hospital for drips.

luckily, my boy is not so bad, he and his little sister is back to school today.

Factsheet - 155mm Gun Explosion In New Zealand On 9 Mar 97 Citation - 1SG Teo Boon Hong

1SG TEO BOON HONG 1SG TEO BOON HONG was the Battery Sergeant Major of ‘B’ Battery, 23rd Battalion, SINGAPORE Artillery.

1SG TEO was thrown over the Muzzle Velocity Indicator (MVI) by the blast and landed about 2 metres behind the MVI when the gun exploded.

He turned around and saw that the camouflage net was burnt, the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) and the area in front of the ammunition were on fire.

Realising the imminent danger of further explosions, he shouted for everyone to clear away from Gun 4.

About this time, he saw PTE RAMESH staggering out of Gun 4, with his face and hands covered with blood. 1SG TEO went back to the Gun to help PTE RAMESH.

Despite the fires surrounding the areas, 1SG TEO dragged PTE RAMESH by the soldier’s webbing, and pulled him to the Command Post. By then, 1SG TEO’s shirt was on fire.

He was oblivious to the fact that his shirt was on fire until someone alerted him to remove his shirt. The horrifying experience that 1SG TEO had in moving PTE RAMESH away from the Gun area did not deter him from repeating the same act of bravery.

1SG TEO BOON HONG ran back to the Gun area for the second time even though he was without a shirt, subjecting himself once again to danger.

His main concern then was to help another soldier, LCP KOH CHIN WEE, who was badly injured and was choking on his own saliva. 1SG TEO BOON HONG’s acts of bravery in the NEW ZEALAND’s training incident are highly commendable.

His composure in times of crisis, and his actions to get the soldiers to move away from the burning areas, have prevented the loss of more lives.

1SG TEO BOON HONG is presented the SAF MEDAL FOR DISTINGUISHED ACT.

next month is the time to pay our respect to our fallen gunners, it is been 12 years since...
